NZAS and Meridian agree extension of load reduction
27 May 2021
Meridian and New Zealand Aluminium Smelters Limited (NZAS) have agreed to extend the electricity
swap initially entered into on 27 April 2021 for a further month to 30 June 2021 to assist with
managing the dry hydrology conditions the country is currently experiencing. The swap compensates
NZAS for voluntarily reducing its consumption of electricity at the Tiwai Aluminium Smelter by up to
30.5MWh per hour.
The swap was due to expire on 31 May. It does not replace Meridian’s ability to call a Smelter
Demand Response if the dry year trigger level in the main Meridian / NZAS electricity contract is
reached.
