July 2022 Monthly traffic update

Auckland Airport total passenger volumes increased by 41% in July 2022 versus July 2021 and now represent 66% of July

2018. Compared to July 2021, international passengers (excl. transits) were up 284%, transit passengers were up 5249% and

domestic passengers were down by 4%.


Key Points:

• International passenger recovery continues with passenger numbers for July 2022 increasing 42% on prior month representing a 50%

recovery compared to July 2018;

• Short-haul and long-haul international passenger numbers have recovered to 64% and 32% respectively when compared to July 2018 with

long-haul passengers increasing by 52% compared to June 2022 and short-haul international passengers increasing by 38% on June 2022;

• Domestic passengers for the month were 4% down on the year prior, they increased by 10% on June 2022 and have recovered to 87% of

the pre-COVID equivalent in July 2018; and

• Queenstown airport had a strong month with passenger numbers for July 2022 at 101% of July 2018. International passengers were 87%

and domestic passengers at 110% when compared to July 2018 due to the timing of school holidays in the month.

In August 2022, total passenger volumes at Auckland Airport were 68% of the pre-COVID equivalent

in the financial year to 30

June 2019, the last full year not impacted by the COVID pandemic. International passengers (excl. transits) were 54% of the pre-

COVID equivalent in August 2018 with transit passengers and domestic passengers at 48% and 84% respectively.



Key Points:

• The international passenger recovery continued in August with passenger movements for the month recovering to 54% of the pre-COVID

equivalent, an increase from 50% in July 2022. Compared to the prior month, passenger movements were marginally down in August reflecting

the school holidays falling in the month of July;

• Short-haul international passenger movements are 66% of the pre-COVID equivalent, with Australia 65% and Pacific Islands 70%. Cook Islands

is still proving popular recovering to 96% compared to August 2018 and Fiji at 86%. Long-haul international passenger movements were 36% of

pre-COVID equivalent. Excluding countries with more restrictive border policies in place (China, Japan, Hong Kong) the recovery is 52%;

• Domestic passenger movements in August 2022 are 84% of the pre-COVID equivalent, with a slight decrease of 4% compared to July 2022; and

• Queenstown once again is proving popular with domestic passenger movements 106% of August 2018 and international passengers 98%.

From August 2022, the format of Auckland Airport’s Monthly Traffic Update has changed. Given the 2022 financial year was significantly impacted by travel restrictions,

the table below now refers to the current period volumes as a percentage of the pre-COVID equivalent
