In December 2022, total passenger volumes at Auckland Airport were 75% of the pre-COVID equivalent

in the financial year
to 30 June 2019, the last full year not impacted by the COVID pandemic. International passengers (excl. transits) were 69% of
the pre-COVID equivalent in December 2018 with transit passengers and domestic passengers at 66% and 84% respectively.
Key Points:
• The international passenger recovery continued in December with international passenger movements for the month recovering to 69% of
the pre-COVID equivalent, an increase from the 67% recovery in November 2022;
• Short-haul international passenger movements were 79% of the pre-COVID equivalent, with Australia 77% and Pacific Islands 87%. Long-
haul international passenger movements were 58% of the pre-COVID equivalent, up from a 51% recovery in the prior month;
• Domestic recovery increased to 84% for December 2022 when compared to December 2018; and
• Queenstown airport international passenger numbers continued to improve, at 126% of December 2018, and domestic demand increased to
94% of December 2018.

In January 2023, total passenger volumes at Auckland Airport were 73% of the pre-COVID equivalent

June 2019, the last full year not impacted by the COVID pandemic. International passengers (excl. transits) were 69% of the pre-
COVID equivalent in January 2019 with transit passengers and domestic passengers at 58% and 81% respectively.
Key Points:
• January passenger numbers were impacted by the flooding event that occurred in Auckland on the evening of 27
th
January with domestic services
resuming at midday on 28 January and international services from 5am on 29 January;
• Prior to the flooding event, international passenger volumes were 71% of January 2019, an increase on the 69% recovery during prior month.
Whilst passenger volumes on 28
th
January were severely depressed, most of the disrupted international passengers subsequently travelled later
in the month and into early February with airline load factors noticeably higher;
• New Zealand passport holding international travellers had recovered to 77% of the pre-COVID equivalent month with non-NZ passport holders
recovering to 64%. Australia and North American passport holder travel was yet higher, recovering to 84% and 85% of January 2019 respectively;
• Short-haul international passenger movements were 80% of the pre-COVID equivalent, with Australia 78% and Pacific Islands 89%. Long-haul
international passenger movements were 56% of the pre-COVID equivalent with the North American route recovering to 93%;
• Domestic recovery has reduced from 84% for December 2022 to 81% for January 2023 when compared to January 2019. Prior to the 27 January
flooding event domestic passenger recovery was similar to December 2022; and
• Queenstown airport international passenger numbers were 126% of January 2019, and domestic demand increasing from the prior month to 97%
of January 2019.
