For April 2024, total passenger volumes at Auckland Airport increased by 8% compared to April 2023. International passengers
(excl. transits) increased by 9%, transit passengers were up 16% and domestic passengers increased by 5% compared to April
2023. Total passenger volumes in April 2024 of 1.53 million were down on the 1.69 million seen in March 2024 with April the first
month of the off-peak IATA Northern Summer season.
Key Points:
• International load factors improved by 1.5ppt during April 2024 compared to the prior year with capacity increasing by 8% compared to international
passenger movements rising by 10%, an additional 72k international passengers travelling in 2024 compared to last year;
• April 2024 is the start of the IATA Northern Summer season and saw the return of Air New Zealand’s seasonal services to Bali and Cairns;
• Demand on mainland China routes continues to improve with passenger movements doubling compared to last year on 74% more seat capacity
resulting in load factors of 83%. Direct China flights stimulate the local China-to-New Zealand market and offer attractive alternatives for
connecting Europe and intra-Asia passenger flows. During April, Sichuan Airlines commenced services to Chengdu which means the number of
direct Auckland to mainland China routes has increased to seven, with six airlines operating;
• Short-haul international passenger movements (travelling to and from Australia or the Pacific Islands) accounted for 59% of all international
passenger movements in the month with passenger volumes on these routes increasing by 4% compared to the prior year on 2% fewer seats.
As a result, load factors rose to 84%;
• During April 2024, New Zealanders made up the largest share of international passenger movements making up nearly half of all international
passenger movements with volume just 4% below April 2019 levels. The next largest nationality was Australians, but this segment of the market
continues to lag 2019 levels with volume down 21% on April 2019;
• Domestic passenger movements increased by 5% on April 2023 with load factors reaching 86% on capacity which was 4% up on the prior year;
and
• Queenstown Airport international passenger movements in April 2024 increased 8% on the prior year and domestic passenger movements
increased 4% on the same month last year.
