Scott Technology Secures New Automation Project

Scott’s Rocklabs Enhances Safety and Efficiency with Advanced Automation at West Angelas

AUCKLAND, NZ [21 JAN 2025] - Scott Technology (NZX:SCT) has secured its third automation project with Rio

Tinto in Australia, this time automating the minerals laboratory at the West Angelas mine site. Led by Scott’s

Rocklabs business unit, the project is set to improve safety and optimise laboratory operations—ultimately

driving better operational outcomes across the entire site and aligning with Rio Tinto’s commitment to

sustainable mining practices.

“This project builds on the strength of our decade-long partnership with Rio Tinto and reinforces Scott

Technology’s leadership in automation," said Mike Christman, CEO of Scott Technology. "By delivering

innovative products and solutions, we’re helping Rio Tinto achieve its goals of safer, more efficient, and

sustainable operations, while ensuring their sites remain at the forefront of modern mining practices.”

The semi-automated Rocklabs system features two Rio 350 Crushers and three ABM 3000 Pulverisers, designed

to process up to 700 samples per day. This system ensures consistent, high-quality data to support smarter

decision-making and optimise site performance. By reducing the need for manual handling, the system lowers

the risk of human error and improves operational efficiency. Its enclosed design, combined with advanced dust

extraction technology, further reduces silica exposure, reinforcing Rio Tinto’s dedication to worker.

Located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, the West Angelas mine is a vital hub for Rio Tinto’s iron ore

operations, contributing significantly to the company’s overall output with an annual production capacity of

nearly 30 million tonnes. The mine plays a key role in supporting Rio Tinto’s supply chain and global iron ore

demands. This latest collaboration builds on the proven success of previous automation projects at Rio Tinto’s

Gudai Darri and Robe Valley sites, where advanced technologies have already demonstrated their ability to

enhance safety, efficiency, and sustainability in mining operations.

"This project highlights the power of automation to make mining operations safer and smarter," added Casey

Jenkins, President of Minerals, Scott Technology. "By automating hands-on processes in the lab, we’re improving

worker safety while ensuring the delivery of more accurate, reliable data with less risk of errors. This data

empowers Rio Tinto to optimise mine performance, minimise waste, and make significant strides toward its

sustainability goals.”
