January 2020 Monthly traffic update and February 2020 preview
-3.4%
Auckland Airport total passenger volumes decreased by 3.4% in January 2020 versus last year. International passengers (excl. Transits)
were in line with last year, transit passengers were down 12.4% and domestic passengers were down by 6.9%.
Key Points:
• Decline in transit passenger for January 2020 mainly driven by LATAM Airlines reducing its Santiago-Auckland-Sydney service to four per week
from daily.
• Decline in domestic passengers for January 2020 mainly driven by Jetstar’s withdrawal from regional services on 1 December 2019.
See overleaf for a preview of the February 2020 traffic results, which we have provided early to help the market understand the evolving Covid-19
situation. January and February 2020 arrivals by country of last residence will be provided in line with the data release from Statistics New Zealand.

February 2020 preview
-8.6%
Auckland Airport total passenger volumes decreased by 8.6% in February 2020 versus last year. International passengers (excl. Transits)
were down 8.4%, transit passengers were down 25.3% and domestic passengers were down by 7.3%.
Key Points:
• The decline in total passengers for February 2020 reflects the ongoing impact that the Covid-19 outbreak is having on New Zealand’s travel and
tourism industry. On February 2nd 2020, the New Zealand Government imposed travel restrictions on foreign nationals travelling or transiting to
and from mainland China. This has resulted in several airlines reducing or suspending their services to China. In addition, airlines operating across
the Tasman have announced capacity reductions in response to falling passenger demand. This has also impacted the New Zealand domestic
travel market with Air New Zealand announcing a reduction in domestic services.
•
We expect the impact from the Covid-19 to be greater in March following further travel restrictions. For the first ten days of March 2020, initial
passenger data indicates that international passengers were down 18%. These numbers are draft and subject to change.
