Mercury appoints new GM Generation
7 May 2021 – Mercury is pleased to announce that Stewart Hamilton has been appointed to the role of
General Manager Generation reporting to Chief Executive Vince Hawksworth.
Mr Hawksworth said the new role, which consolidates all of Mercury’s renewable generation operations, will be
integral to supporting the contribution Mercury makes to New Zealand’s transition to a low carbon economy.
“A core part of the role is ensuring the long-term sustainability, resilience and productivity of our hydro, geothermal
and wind assets – so that they continue to work hard for all New Zealanders,” said Mr Hawksworth.
“Stew is uniquely positioned in terms of the perspective he offers, and the experience he brings in operating hugely
complex assets in a rapidly changing environment,” said Mr Hawksworth.
Mr Hamilton joins Mercury from New Zealand Aluminium Smelters Ltd (NZAS) where he was Chief Executive and
General Manager. Under his leadership NZAS delivered record annual safety performance.
“Stew’s laser focus on health and safety was a key factor in his appointment to the role, with his values strongly
aligning with Mercury’s own commitment to the safety and wellbeing and a zero-harm mentality,” said Mr
Hawksworth.
Mr Hamilton’s confirmation as General Manager Generation is the final appointment to Mercury’s new executive
structure, announced in January this year. He will join Mercury in the third quarter of the calendar year.
“This is an exciting time for Mercury, and these changes will help contribute to our ongoing success and position us
well for the future.”
