May 2021 Monthly traffic update and June 2021 preview

Auckland Airport total passenger volumes increased by 747.1% in May 2021 versus last year. International passengers (excl.
transits) were up 778.0%, transit passengers were down 73.3% and domestic passengers were up by 755.7%.

Key Points:
• International arrivals in May last year (2020) were significantly impacted by the closure of the New Zealand border by the New Zealand Government
from 20 March 2020 in response to COVID-19 to all but New Zealand citizens and permanent residents. Domestic services in May 2020 were
also impacted by travel restrictions, with New Zealand at Alert Level 3 until 11.59pm Wednesday 13 May 2020.
• The increase in total international passengers for May 2021 reflects trans-Tasman quarantine free travel to and from Australia which was
operational from 11.59pm Sunday 18 April 2021. The arrangement allows travellers who have been in New Zealand or Australia for 14 days to
cross the Tasman border in either direction without having to go into MIQ. Trans-Tasman quarantine free travel from Victoria was temporarily
paused from 7.59pm Tuesday 25 May 2021 until Tuesday 22 June 2021.
• Domestic services for May 2021 were also up on the prior year reflecting increased domestic activity and international passengers transferring to
domestic flights.

June 2021 Monthly traffic update preview

Auckland Airport total passenger volumes increased by 196.9% in June 2021 versus last year. International passengers (excl.
transits) were up 468.3%, transit passengers were down 71.3% and domestic passengers were up by 171.2%.

Key Points:
• International arrivals in June last year (2020) were significantly impacted by the closure of the New Zealand border by the New Zealand
Government from 20 March 2020 in response to COVID-19 to all but New Zealand citizens and permanent residents. Domestic services in June
2020 were also impacted by limited demand because of international travel restrictions.
• The increase in total international passengers for June 2021 reflects trans-Tasman quarantine free travel to and from Australia which was
operational from 11.59pm Sunday 18 April 2021. The arrangement allows travellers who have been in New Zealand or Australia for 14 days to
cross the Tasman border in either direction without having to go into MIQ. Trans-Tasman quarantine free travel from Victoria was paused until
Tuesday 22 June 2021 and from all Australian states from Sunday 27 June 2021. All pauses in trans-Tasman quarantine free travel have adversely
impacted international passenger performance for June 2021.
• Domestic services for May 2021 were also up on the prior year reflecting increased domestic activity and international passengers transferring to
domestic flights.
