Shareholder register analysis across NZX-listed companies, inspired by NZSA's shareholder concentration data. Total shareholders extracted from annual report statutory sections. Coverage: 107/131 companies (82%).
Sorted by total shareholder count. Source: annual report statutory shareholder information sections.
| Sector | Companies | Avg Shareholders | Total Shareholders |
|---|---|---|---|
| Communication Services | 2 | 100,731 | 201,462 |
| Utilities | 7 | 34,452 | 241,161 |
| Financials | 15 | 24,786 | 371,796 |
| Materials | 4 | 11,657 | 46,628 |
| Industrials | 19 | 10,499 | 199,488 |
| Consumer Staples | 14 | 7,852 | 109,923 |
These companies are missing total shareholder counts. Annual report PDFs are either not in the announcements database, truncated before the statutory shareholder section, or filed as bond/debt issuers without equity shareholder data.
Total shareholdersare extracted from the statutory “Spread of Shareholders” or “Analysis of Shareholder” section of annual reports, as required under NZX Listing Rules. Extraction uses regex pattern matching on PDF text, with Claude Haiku AI fallback for complex formats.
Top 20 shareholders data comes from the annual report top-20 register disclosure. Top 5% and Top 20% represent the aggregate holding of the 5 and 20 largest shareholders respectively.
HHI (Herfindahl-Hirschman Index) measures ownership concentration among the top 20 holders. Higher values indicate more concentrated ownership. Above 2,500 is considered highly concentrated.
Director counts reflect current board members (where resignation_date is null). Independence is based on the NZX-disclosed independence status.
NZX shareholder concentration analysis: top-20 block holders, HHI concentration index, nominee vs institutional vs individual ownership, and year-over-year ownership changes across 100+ companies.
Which fund managers hold multiple companies in the same NZX sector? Identify common institutional owners across sector peers for IR roadshow targeting and understanding institutional capital allocation.
Track 5%+ ownership changes across NZX-listed companies. Increases, decreases, initial disclosures, and ceased holdings from classified SPH notices — most active holders, most targeted companies, sector breakdown.

Common reasons for gaps: offshore-listed investment trusts (FCT, BIT, HFL, TEM), bond-only issuers (CNU), PDF text extraction truncation (#1914), or newly listed companies without a full annual report cycle.
