Data Sources & Methodology
Source: MBIE's Government Electronic Tenders Service (GETS) open data. Includes all published contract awards with supplier details.
Value Coverage: Only 21% of contracts have disclosed award values. Agencies are not required to publish award amounts for all contract types, so total government procurement spend is significantly higher than the figures shown.
Vendor Concentration (HHI): The Herfindahl-Hirschman Index is calculated across the top 50 suppliers by value share. Scores below 1,500 indicate a competitive market, 1,500-2,500 indicates moderate concentration, and above 2,500 indicates high concentration.
Sole-Source Detection: Contracts are classified as sole-source when the competition type field contains "Closed", "Limited", "Sole", or "Direct". This is an approximation based on available metadata.
NZX Cross-Linking: Suppliers are matched to NZX-listed companies by name and NZBN. Matches are approximate and may not capture all subsidiary relationships.
