What does the C&ESG Scorecard measure?

The scorecard evaluates NZX companies across five pillars: Carbon & Climate (30%), Environmental (15%), Social (20%), Governance (25%), and Disclosure (10%). Each pillar scores 0-100 based on specific criteria, and the weighted composite determines a classification from Leader to Beginner.

How are companies classified?

Leader (70+): strong across all pillars. Fast Follower (50-69): good on most pillars with gaps in 1-2. Explorer (30-49): early stage with some disclosure. Beginner (<30): minimal ESG disclosure.

Does a low score mean poor ESG performance?

No. Scores reflect available data coverage and disclosed policies. A company may have strong ESG practices but score lower if it reports through channels not captured in our analysis. Scores should be interpreted as indicators of disclosure completeness, not actual ESG outcomes.

Methodology

The C&ESG Scorecard produces a weighted composite score (0-100) across five independently scored pillars. Each pillar evaluates specific criteria and scores 0-100 based on whether the company meets each factor.

Carbon & Climate (30%)

Scope 1/2/3 emissions disclosure, emissions trajectory, net zero targets, SBTi validation, climate risk identification, scenario analysis, NZ CS compliance, and targets with progress tracking.

Environmental (15%)

Emissions intensity metrics, renewable energy targets, waste reduction targets, water targets, TNFD reporting, and Green Star commitment.

Social (20%)

Board gender diversity, workforce diversity data, safety reporting (TRIFR/LTIFR), safety trends, human rights policy, living wage commitment, parental leave, and B Corp certification.

Governance (25%)

Board independence, board self-review, tax governance disclosure, cybersecurity policy, data privacy policy, GRS score, and board attendance.

Disclosure (10%)

Reporting to frameworks (GRI/TCFD/ISSB), multiple framework adoption, NZ Climate Standards reporting, TNFD reporting, and third-party certifications.
