It tracks how often these terms appear and whether their frequency is increasing or decreasing.

Does a mention indicate the company is at risk?

Not necessarily. Risk language may appear in standard audit reports, risk management disclosures, or industry commentary. A mention indicates the topic is discussed in company filings, not that the company faces that specific risk. Higher mention counts may also reflect larger companies filing more documents. Always read the source announcement for context.

How is the trend calculated?

The trend compares risk language mentions in the last 12 months against the prior 12 months. If the ratio exceeds 1.3x it is flagged as increasing; below 0.7x as decreasing; otherwise stable.

The Risk Language Monitor scans the full text of NZX company announcements for specific risk-related keywords across 8 categories. Routine announcement types (SECISSUE, SHINTR, SSH, KEYDATES, ALLOT) are excluded to focus on substantive disclosures.

Trend calculation: Compares risk mentions in the last 12 months against the prior 12 months. A ratio above 1.3x suggests an increasing trend; below 0.7x suggests a decreasing trend.

Critical flag: Indicates the presence of going concern, covenant, or liquidity keywords — categories that may suggest elevated financial stress based on available data.

Limitations:Keyword matching captures mentions in any context, including negative contexts (e.g., "no going concern issues"). Higher mention counts may reflect larger companies filing more documents rather than elevated risk levels. This tool identifies language patterns and does not constitute a risk assessment.
